1 John 1:1-10
The Incarnation of the Word of Life
1 That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked at and our hands have touched—this we proclaim concerning the Word of life. 2 The life appeared; we have seen it and testify to it, and we proclaim to you the eternal life, which was with the Father and has appeared to us. 3 We proclaim to you what we have seen and heard, so that you also may have fellowship with us. And our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son, Jesus Christ. 4 We write this to make our joy complete.
Light and Darkness, Sin and Forgiveness
5 This is the message we have heard from him and declare to you: God is light; in him there is no darkness at all. 6 If we claim to have fellowship with him and yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live out the truth. 7 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin.
8 If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. 9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. 10 If we claim we have not sinned, we make him out to be a liar and his word is not in us.
The "Word of Life" in 1 John 1 is indeed the same Logos that John introduces in the first chapter of his Gospel...In both writings, John uses this term to bridge the gap between the eternal God and the physical world, showing that the Divine Reason and Life of the Father didn't stay as an abstract thought in heaven but became a living, Breathing Person...While the Gospel of John emphasizes the Logos as the agent of creation who "became flesh," 1 John 1 focuses on the Logos as the source of eternal life that was physically experienced—heard, seen, and touched—by the disciples...By calling Him the "Word of Life," John is teaching us that Jesus is the visible expression of God’s Invisible Character and LOVE...Just as our spoken words reveal the thoughts of our hearts, Jesus is the "Word" that reveals the heart of the Father to us...This chapter and John's Gospel are a beautiful connection because it shows that our fellowship isn't based on a set of rules, but on a relationship with the Living Word who brings us out of the darkness and into His wonderful Light...
John met and gives us the Message of the Light of God and the reality of fellowship with others...The central message John received from Jesus and now declares to us is that "God is Light; in Him there is no darkness at all"...This definition of God's nature establishes the standard for our fellowship with Him...If we claim to have fellowship with God while continuing to walk in the darkness of sin and deceit, we are living a lie and not practicing the Truth of God's Word...However, when we walk in the Light, as He is in the Light, we experience a profound "shared partnership" or koinonia with one another...This walking in the Light is not a claim of sinless perfection, but a commitment to honesty, transparency, and a life lived in the presence of God's Truth...In this Light, the blood of Jesus, His Son, serves as a continuous preservative, purifying us from all sin and allowing us to remain in a state of grace and fellowship despite our human frailties...
Jesus give us honesty, that we should we confess, and the provision of forgiveness...John addresses the human tendency toward self-deception, warning that if we claim to be without sin, we only deceive ourselves and the Truth is not in us...He teaches that the mark of a child of God is not the absence of struggle, but the presence of honesty...If we confess our sins, God demonstrates His immense love by being "faithful and just" to forgive us and cleanse us from all unrighteousness...This promise is the "Solid Rock" of our peace; it assures us that our standing with God is not based on our own merit, but on His righteous character and the purifying work of Christ...By acknowledging our need for a Savior, we move from the lawlessness of the world into the order and light of the Kingdom...This process of confession and cleansing is what enables us to journey through life with Divine Assurance, knowing that even when we stumble, we have a Father who is ready to restore us to full fellowship...
Jesus promises an Abundant Life of Complete Joy...Ultimately, 1 John 1 teaches us that the purpose of the Gospel is the provision of joy...This joy is not a fleeting emotion dependent on earthly circumstances, but a deep-seated well-being that comes from being right with God and in harmony with His children...When we walk in the truth and experience the purification of the blood of Jesus, the heavy burdens of guilt and darkness are lifted...This allows us to serve the LORD with a zeal and spiritual fervor that is unhindered by the condemnation of our hearts...In these most troubled times, we anchor ourselves in the tangible reality of the "Word of Life," knowing that the same Jesus who was touched by the disciples is the same LORD who sustains us today...By living in His Light and practicing this honesty, we ensure that our lives remain a testimony to the lavished LOVE of the Father, reflecting His purity to a world in need of His Guiding Light of His Son...
