1 John 1:1-10
Jesus is the Word of Life
1 That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked at and our hands have touched—this we proclaim concerning the Word of life. 2 The life appeared; we have seen it and testify to it, and we proclaim to you the eternal life, which was with the Father and has appeared to us. 3 We proclaim to you what we have seen and heard, so that you also may have fellowship with us. And our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son, Jesus Christ. 4 We write this to make our joy complete.
Light and Darkness, Sin and Forgiveness
5 This is the message we have heard from him and declare to you: God is light; in him there is no darkness at all. 6 If we claim to have fellowship with him and yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live out the truth. 7 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin.
8 If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. 9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. 10 If we claim we have not sinned, we make him out to be a liar and his word is not in us.
St. John teaches us that those things from the very beginning and in the beginning which he and the Disciples have read about and had heard about in the Bible, has now been seen by the Disciples with their own eyes...In the beginning was the Word and The Word was with God...Jesus was with God in the beginning...Through Jesus all things are made; without Him nothing was made that has been made...In Him is Life, and that Life is the Word of Life of all mankind...His Light shines in the darkness, and the darkness will never overcome it...
The Word of Life became flesh and made His dwelling among His people of His time...The Disciples personally got to see His Glory, the Glory of the One and Only Son, who came from the Father, who is Completely and Unconditional Full of Grace and Truth...Out of His Fullness of Grace and Truth, the Disciples have all received Grace in place of Grace already given...For the law was given through Moses; but Grace and Truth has come through Jesus Christ...No one has ever seen God, but the One and Only Son, who is Himself God and is in closest relationship with the Father, who sent Him to earth and has made Him known...The Disciples were personal eyewitnesses of His Majesty...
Even after seeing Jesus for three years and all that He had said and done, there were still doubts, even among the Disciples...After Jesus was Risen from His death by His Father, Thomas doubted Him, even though the other Disciples told Him He was still alive after He had died and they had seen Him...Thomas said to the other Disciple, “Unless I see the nail marks in His hands and put my finger where the nails were, and put my hand into His side, I will not believe.”...A week past his disciples were in the house that they had seen Him the first time, and Thomas was with them...Though the doors were locked, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you!”...Then He said to Thomas, “Put your finger here; see My hands...Reach out your hand and put it into My side...Stop doubting and believe.”...Thomas said to Him, “My LORD and my God!”...Thomas had called Him God...Then Jesus told Thomas, “Because you have seen Me, you have believed; blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.”...
The Disciples for three years and those who closely followed Him got to look at Him with their eyes and with their hands they got to touch The Word learned how close He is to God...And they can proclaim after meeting with Him and hearing Him and seeing what He can do and even touching Him, that Jesus is The Light and the Word of Life...The Word of Life appeared on earth; and the Disciples had seen Him and testified to Him, and they proclaim to all people about Eternal Life...The Word of Life told them that Eternal Life is believing in the One who was sent from Heaven, and believing in the One True God, the One who sent Him is Eternal Life...Or as Jesus said it: Now this is Eternal Life: that they know You, the Only True God, and Jesus Christ, whom You have sent...The Father had now appeared to the Disciples on earth, because those who have seen Jesus have seen the Father...The Father is in Jesus and Jesus is in the Father...The Father and the Son are One...The Father lives in Jesus doing His Work...Jesus taught them these different things so that they would have faith...He told them that His teachings were for them, so that in Him they could find peace...He said in this world you will have trouble...But take heart!...Jesus had overcome this world...He said, “Peace I leave with you...My peace I give to you...I do not give to you as the world gives...Don’t let your heart be troubled or fearful.”...
The Disciples will and can proclaim to all people about what they have seen and heard, so that we too may have fellowship with the Disciples and the Apostles of His...And this fellowship is with the Father and with His Son, Jesus Christ...Their writings of the New Testament makes their Joy Complete...Where there is Light there is forgiveness of sins...The True Light gives Life and He is the Light of all mankind...This is the message the Disciples learned from Jesus when they were being taught be their Master and Teacher as they listened to Him...God is Light; in God there is no darkness at all...When anyone claims have fellowship with Him and yet walk in the darkness, they lie and do not live out the Truth...But if His followers walk in the Light, as He is in the Light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, God's Son, purifies the believer from all sin...This True Light that came into the world, lived and taught the Disciples, then died on the Cross, and then was Risen from His death by God is the True Light of this world...
If anyone claims to be without sin, they deceive themselves and the Truth is not with them...But if we confess our sins, He is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness...If we claim that we have not sinned, then we as followers of Him make Him out to be a liar and His Word is not in us...So now we have an Advocate with the Father—Jesus Christ, the Righteous One...He is the Atoning Sacrifice for our sins, and not only for our own personal sins but also for the sins of the whole world...
Right before Jesus was arrested, He prayed for those who believed in Him...He prayed for those who will believe in Him through the Disciples telling of the gospel...He prayed that all of the Disciples may be one, Father, just as You are in Me and I AM in You...May the Disciples also be in the Father and Son so that the world may believe that You did send Me...Jesus had given the Glory to His Disciples that God had given Him, so that all people would be one as Him and the Father are One— Jesus would be in His Disciples and followers, as the Father is in the Son—so that the people of the world might be brought to complete unity and harmony...Then the world will know that God did send Jesus to earth and He has LOVED them as the Father has LOVE His Son...
The last part of His prayer is, “Father, I want those You have given Me to be with Me where I AM, and to see My Glory, the Glory you have given Me because You LOVED Me before the creation of the world.”...“Righteous Father, though the world does not know You, I know You, and they know that You have sent Me...I have made You known to them, and will continue to make You known in order that the LOVE You have for Me may be in them and that I Myself may be in them.”...
