In addition to the Shop Orientation, you must receive Proficiency Training from Shop staff before using the lathe, as well as approval of each operation.
The lathe and mill are the two basic machines of a machine shop. Together, they can make a nearly infinite variety of forms. The lathe primarily makes cylindrical shapes, while the mill makes parts with flat sides and angles. Lathes use a variety of tooling and attachments to perform operations such as straight and shoulder turning, facing, grooving, parting, tapers, and cutting screw threads, all with a high degree of precision.
The Enco has a maximum distance between centers of 36" (91 cm) and a maximum swing over the bed of 12" (30 cm). The spindle bore has a MT 5 taper and the diameter is 1.5" (3.8 cm).
The Shop has a range of basic accessories for the Enco lathe including a quick-change tool post with several tool holders, 3- and 4-jaw chucks, faceplate, steady-rest, follow-rest, and a selection of taps, dies, boring bars, and tool bits.
