ELA - We wrapped up our unit on fables. Students shared their knowledge about the fables and nursery rhymes that we we have learned. Students showed that they learned the different parts of a fable, how they are similar and different from nursery rhymes, and that each fable teaches us a lesson. We also explored different versions of the fable and compared them.
This week we continued working on decoding (sounding out and blending back together) CVC words and phrases. Students looked at pictures of items then chose the word that goes with the picture, decoded a word and chose the picture that it goes with, isolated beginning, middle, and ending sounds, and circled the word that was dictated to them.
We are continuing to focus on individual letters, letter sounds, and writing each lowercase letter on handwriting paper. We reviewed all the letters we have worked on so far: k, x, y, j, w, u, m, a, t, o, d, c, g, i, n, s, f, h, e, p, z, l, b, r and v. We have also been working daily to stretch/slide and blend words based on the letter sounds we hear.
Students are also working to differentiate between vowels and consonants. Sometimes we write our CVC words (consonant, vowel, consonant words) with a red and blue crayon. The consonants get written in blue and the vowels in red.
Dr. Seuss Week - Since Dr. Seuss' 117th birthday was on Tuesday, the class has also been reading many different books authored by him and completing various comprehension activities that go along with them.
Math- Students continued working on solving addition sentences. Students learned the terms for each part of an addition sentence: addend, plus sign, equals sign, and sum. Students have been using different strategies like a number line, tens frame, and cubes to help them solve addition sentences.
Bible Study - We learned about when Jesus preformed the miracle of feeding the 5,000 with just 2 fish and 5 loaves of bread. We learned that God sent Jesus to care for all our needs, including eternal life.
Science - We began our unit on taking care of the Earth. Students learned about the different parts of earth (land and water) and then the natural resources that the earth provides for us. Students also began learning how to conserve these natural resources.
