ELA - We started a unit on fables. We studied the fables " The Dog and His Reflection" and "The Tortious and the Hare". Students learned the different parts of a fable, how they are similar and different from nursery rhymes, and that each fable teaches us a lesson. We also explored different versions of the fable and compared them. The lesson we learned from " The Dog and His Reflection" was "if you are greedy, you may lose everything". The moral learned from "The Tortious and the Hare" was "Slow and steady wins the race"
This week we continued working on decoding (sounding out and blending back together) CVC words and phrases. Students looked at pictures of items then chose the word that goes with the picture, decoded a word and chose the picture that it goes with, isolated beginning, middle, and ending sounds, and circled the word that was dictated to them.
We are continuing to focus on individual letters, letter sounds, and writing each lowercase letter on handwriting paper. We reviewed all the letters we have worked on so far: k, x, y, j, w, u, m, a, t, o, d, c, g, i, n, s, f, h, e, p, z, l, b, r and v. We have also been working daily to stretch/slide and blend words based on the letter sounds we hear.
Students are also working to differentiate between vowels and consonants. Sometimes we write our CVC words (consonant, vowel, consonant words) with a red and blue crayon. The consonants get written in blue and the vowels in red.
Math- We began our unit on addition. Students learned the terms for each part of an addition sentence: addend, plus sign, equals sign, and sum. Then we began learning different strategies for solving an addition sentence. This week students had learned how to use a number line to help them solve an addition problem and how to use tens frames. Last week covered using our fingers and using cubes so far.
Bible Study - We learned the story of when Jesus turned water into wine. At a wedding in Cana, Jesus turned water into wine. Jesús is powerful and compassionate enough to care for our every need.
