Unit 7: Djembe

About this unit:

In this unit you will explore African music and in particular how to play the djembe. You will learn, perform and record a traditional African drumming piece as a whole class and in small groups. You'll compose your own rhythmic patterns, which will become part of your own composed final piece.

You will also, if you have time, learn an African song!

What's in it for me?

Rhythm is an essential ingredient in all music. It can be used to inject energy, build excitement, or bring about stillness and calm. African music is some of the most rhythmically vibrant and has influenced music from jazz to hip hop. Once you've learned some African rhythms, you will never be without your groove.
