Time Signatures

  • Vertical black bars called bar lines divide the staff into bars

  • This staff has been split into two bars

  • Time signatures define the amount and type of notes that each measure contains.

  • The first bar is in 4/4 and the second bar is in 3/4

  • This means the first bar contains four crotchets

  • The second measure contains three crotchets

Note Lengths

Ta Ta Ta Ta

  • This note is called a crotchet, it is worth 1 beat.

Te - te Te - te Te - te Te - te

  • This note is called a quaver, it is worth 1/2 beat.

  • Above you can see two quavers paid together , they are still worth half a beat each.
