Composing

During your two years you will compose two pieces. One of these is a free composition and a second will be based on a brief set by Edexcel. The composition briefs will be released in the September of the second year of your course. Composing is an opportunity to use your imagination to draw on inspiration form your set work and also other music you may have experienced. It will be important for you to consider the role of the audience and occasion in your composition.

What do you need to submit?

For both compositions, you will need to submit:

  • A 'detailed notated score' or written account.

  • A recording.

Your score or written account should be accurate and detailed enough to ensure that it will allow another musician to recreate your composition accurately . A score can be in the form of conventional staff notation or a lead sheet, chord chart, tables of diagrams. A written account should be no more than 500 words and should include chord patterns and how they are to be played.

Your score should have dynamics and expressive markings, a title and tempo marking and note values written in their simplest form.
