Lesson Objectives:

  • To be aware that this is only one movement (section) from a three movement piece

  • To understand the 3 part structure of Sonata Form

  • To look at what happens in the exposition, development and recapitulation

  • To look at how Beethoven ‘breaks the rules’ with choices of keys!

Structure

Before looking at the rest of the 1st movement, you must understand the structure of the 1st movement (following the 10 bar introduction)

This set work is only the first part of a 3 movement piece known as a sonata.

The 2nd movement is a beautiful slow one and the 3rd movement a fast Rondo.

One of the key features of a sonata is the structure of its 1st movement known as sonata form.

Sonata form is made up of three main sections.
