Fusions

Fusion is non-classical music that combines different styles - originally jazz and rock, but now the term is used for almost any blend of different musical traditions from around the world.

For many years now, people have become increasingly aware of the traditional music of their own and other cultures. Greater opportunities for overseas travel and the migration of populations between different countries have also led to the dissemination of previously isolated traditions.

Awareness of the music from other world cultures has also been encouraged by WOMAD (World of Music, Arts and Dance) - an international festival celebrating the arts from around the globe, held in more than 30 countries, including Britain, since 1982.

The interaction of different cultures can often lead to exciting new styles although the dominance of Western culture in many parts of the world usually means that one of the elements in such fusions is almost always some type of Western pop, rock or jazz.
