18 athletes race at State in each event.
2016 is the top 18 times after State. 2017 - 2021 are the top 18 times before state. (I.e., the 18 automatic qualifiers.)
For 2022 - 2024 I recorded the number of "scratches"/non-declares. - I.e., they opted not to enter the State Championship in that event, even though they had a qualifying time. That's typically because they wanted to focus on another event. In a few cases it was due to injury.
The "Last Entry" column is the time of the 18th fastest person, after scratches, qualifying for State.
Marks in Green in the 2024 SHS Best columns are (likely) State Qualifiers.
The end of XC to the beginning of Track: Summit Distance Project winter training, Nordic or Skimo.

2025 Track and Field State Championship:
Endurance racing is painful. It's not for the soft. Whether it’s the slow burn of a 5k XC race or the acid bath of an 800, each type of endurance event inflicts intense suffering in some form. Athletes who are better able to tolerate the discomfort that comes with competing have an advantage over those with a lesser tolerance. Former 5000-meter American record holder Bob Kennedy said it well: “One thing about racing is that it hurts. You better accept that from the beginning or you’re not going anywhere.”
Running is hard. It’s rather simple, but simple ain’t easy. To become a successful runner, you must "become comfortable being uncomfortable." You must embrace discomfort. You must learn how to train and race hard. As Greg Lemond said, "It doesn’t get easier, you just go faster."
The good news is that athletes can increase their tolerance of race pain through training. Research has shown that workouts that induce high levels of discomfort increase pain tolerance.
Here’s the secret - once you develop a good work ethic, train consistently and learn how to push yourself it somehow isn’t that hard anymore. Somehow hard becomes “I can do this. This is what I do. This is who I am.”
The embrace of working hard becomes an internal characteristic that will benefit you in all aspects of life, for the rest of your life.
The team environment, where everyone is competing for each other, not with each other, tremendously accelerates learning how to embrace discomfort. The team environment makes it easier, more enjoyable. We are striving to create a great team culture where everyone works hard to support each other. The team success then reflects on all.
Discomfort is life-enhancing. Join the Summit Track Distance Team, where the tough build courage.
SUMMIT TRACK DISTANCE TEAM
The SHS Track Distance Team is looking for aspiring new runners to join our program.
We need new talent to build a strong tradition. Attributes of successful distance runners include those who are fit, fast and athletic, although all physical traits and abilities can succeed. If you perform tasks well when no one is looking, enjoy physical activity and don’t easily give up, you may be a good fit for our program. Give it two weeks and chances are you will be hooked.
The discipline that comes with training your body translates to the classroom as well, and you will find that many of the most successful and purposeful scholars at any school are distance runners.
Track season runs from the end of February to the State Championship at the end of May. Of course, serious runners aiming to compete at the highest levels train far beyond the official season. Our goal is to become one of the best distance programs in the country and dominate the distance events at track meets, with multiple individuals qualifying for State, including the 4x800 relay teams. You can be a part of building that legacy.
We practice daily at Summit High School and varied locations. Practice is at 3:10 p.m. weekdays except 2:20 on Wednesdays. Saturday morning practice is normally at 10:00 a.m.
Average training distances for freshmen range between 3-4 miles. Track distance races are the 800, 1600, 3200 and 4x800 relay.
You don't need to be a great runner to start. What we care about is that you are willing to challenge yourself to improve and have fun! You must have a desire to work hard.
We believe in our program, and want you to join. We know we can help you succeed and contribute to the success of the team. There could be many miles ahead of you, but if you travel them with students who value success, friendship, and integrity, you will find them to be the best and most valuable ones of your life.
We hope you take a risk and challenge yourself to compete in track. Seize your opportunity.
Join us, and unleash your champion!
