Not a bad Saturday!
This was a wonderful meet for us with a huge number of great performances. The SMR started the day off with Faith running the 200 and Lauren anchoring to the first of four relays wins on the day. The girls 4x800 followed up next with Avery, Cece, Lila and Claire winning. The boys 4x800 followed with a mission of setting a qualifying mark for the State Championship. Mission Accomplished! A time of 8:24 made it to State in 2021 and 8:26 in 2022. (The top eighteen times in each event qualify.) 8:24 was the goal and the team of Dom, Josh, Carter and Will ran a stellar 8:17.32 that will solidly lock them into a trip to the State Championship. Josh, Carter and Will all ran season bests, according to hand splits, and Dom was very close.
Last year Summit sent three competitors to State – Dom, Ella and Emily Koetteritz in the triple jump. In the last two meets the distance team has earned 12 athletes trips to State! The four runners in the girls and boys 4x800 plus two alternates in each.
We ran a second boys 4x800 and Gavin, Jens, Donovan and Zach ran very well. It was the first race of the season for Gavin and Zach.
Next up was the 1600. Avery won and more points were scored by Claire closing fast for 3rd (her first high school 1600), Josie in 5th in her first high school individual race and Darby in 6th. Josh lowered his PR by 2/10ths for second place, Carter placed third, Cain lowered his PR by a second for 7th and Donovan ran his first high school solo race!
The 400, while not a distance event, is good for distance runners to run to measure and improve their speed. The distance runners speed is quite good as Ella and Lauren went 1st (1.5 second PR) and 2nd. Claire finished a strong 6th and Lila 19th in her first high school individual race. Jens lowered his 400 PR by 8 seconds.
The 800 was a blast and a show of real Summit domination. Ella, Cece and Avery swept the first three places, with Darby and Lila also in the top 11. Cece ran a huge 6 second PR! The boys extending the domination, placing 5 in the top 6! Dom ran within a tenth of a second of his PR from last year for the win in what looks to be a State Qualifying time. He is current placed 6th in the 800. Josh, Will and Carter clearly gave it their all in the 4x800 and 1600s, as the efforts caused open 800 times much slower than their 4x800 splits, but they still placed 3rd, 4th and 5th. Zach PR'd in his first track race in two years!! Gavin ran his first high school 800, after a big air ski season delayed season start, in a solid 16th.
Cain won his first high school race with a huge 15 second PR in the 3200! Jens was on his way to a debut 3200 in the 12:30 range before afflicted with a side stitch and still held on for 5th place.
The focus of the meet for the boys had been qualifying the 4x800. For the girls, it was qualifying the 4x400. And they weren't running fresh. Ella and Lauren had both run two events prior for development and to help earn team points. They were joined by Faith and Teagan. Despite fatigue Ella and Lauren ran very strong legs to help the team to the victory and a time of 4:15.03. Last year, in an outlier, 4:12.56 was required to go to State. In 2021 it was 4:17.30. Currently the girls 4x400 time ranks 9th. While not a lock, it looks good for another group of girls racing at State.

DISTANCE RESULTS: Team numbers were down due to prom but those that made the trip enjoyed a great day at a beautiful venue and fantastic track.
The girls 4x800 of Ella, Avery, Sage and Olivia raced to 3rd in 11:32.06. It was Olivia's first track race of the season.
No personal bests were broken in the 1600 besides Roan's debut high school 1600 in 5:40.96. Dom picked up his first win of the day in an essentially uncontested 4:54.45. Ella faced off against Isabel Allori, #1 ranked 3A girl in the state. Ella won this duel at Fort Collins, but today Isabel struck back with an exceptionally fast 5:00.22.
Olivia ran a strong 1:10.47 400 meter based largely off soccer fitness, as she just recently started training with the track team.
The 800s were a different story altogether from the 1600s as four new PRs and a season best were set. Dom, Roan, James and Niamh all ran new PRs and Josh made his injury delayed debut.
Dom went sub-2:00 for the first time in his career with a hard fought win in 1:59.82. Steamboat's Bowden Tuminello dueled with Dom the whole way, which helped them both achieve PRs. Roan and James also set 800m PRs, James by almost 4 seconds. Josh returned to racing from a hip injury with a very strong 2:11.30 in his first race of the season! Niamh took a huge 7 seconds off her 800m best.
Josh's 2:11.30 earns him the fastest SHS Freshman time ever and jumps him into 9th on the all-time SHS list!
Dom's 1:59.82 moves him (temporarily) into 21st place in the 4A 800-meter rankings.
There is a small chance that this time will get him into State if there are enough non-declares in the 800, but most likely it will require lowering his time by another second.
Olivia, Ella, Avery and Niamh finished up the meet with fourth in the 4x400. Both relays were just seconds off the times set at Battle Mountain.
