2022/4/15: Summit track team overcomes adverse conditions to place high at Norsemen Invitational
DISTANCE RESULTS:
Summit Girls won the Norsemen Invitational! Summit Boys Third! With a lot of points coming from the distance runners. (And more would have been scored had the meet not been ended before the 300m hurdles due to the "feels like" wind chill.)
The girls scored 20 points in the 1600, with Adaline Avery winning in 6:17.48, just .36 off her PR (despite the very brisk winds)! Avery Eytel was just behind and closing fast after a slightly slow opening 200, finishing second in a new PR of 6:19.32. She passed two Golden View runners in the last 200 meters to earn 8 points for the team. Adding two more points with a 7th place finish was Niamh Nelson in 6:42.74.
We tested Cece Miner's speed in the 400 (a warm up for the 3200 that never happened) and she responded with a swift 1:16.55 for 6th place and 3 points. Not bad for a distance runner in her first ever 400! The 400 was won by Summit sprinter Shannon Reed in 1:12.61 and Piper Salazar was 5th in 1:16.04.
For the boys, "long sprinter" Jonah Mocatta showed his wheels (Nordic trained) with a 57.35 for 3rd place. When he replaces his "super squish" shoes with some spikes, he will drop a couple more seconds off that.
Dominykas Remeikis "cruised" (we are working on Dom "relaxing" the first lap) to a victory in the 1600 in 4:50.25. He started off easy and dropped a couple seconds per lap, easily pulling away from the competition. Bryce Oppito finished his first official high school 1600 in 6:16.43 after a shaky bus ride.
The boys opened up the competition with our first entry into the 4x800 relay this season. Kai Oppito, Bryce Oppito, Austin Bell and Jonah Mocatta combined for a 4th place finish in 10:20.29. It was Kai's (another Nordic skier developing further fitness and competitive experience in running) first ever high school race! He lead off the relay with a strong first leg which Bryce, Austin and Jonah maintained. Jonah passed two runners to move the team up to 4th.
This was an awesome performance in a weather shortened meet! It would have been great to see what we would have done in the 800, 3200 and 4x400. We get another chance Saturday in Glenwood Springs.
