Although weather forecasts were threatening, Friday night snows did not reach Denver and the meet went on as scheduled. The day was cool and it got colder and windier in the afternoon, but it was a good day for racing. There were only 2 entries per school per event, so many of the freshmen made their high school track debuts in relays.
One of those relays started the meet on an excellent note, with Cece, Paige, Marin and Lily winning the 4x800 in a time of 11:30.
Highlights are Josh's win in the 800 in 2:01.73 and Ella's win in the 1600 in 5:11.78. Neither were PRs, but after just a week of practice (and Nordic going a week longer than past year's) it was a good start.
New Personal Records:
Cain and Lukas with identical times of 4:57.44 in the 1600. (Cain officially got first by .003 seconds!) It was great to see Cain and Lukas push each other in the race, each of them taking turns going to the front and pushing the pace. They likely would not have PR'd if they didn't have each other to race with.
Malachi knocked a big 6 seconds off his 800 with a time of 2:18.12.
"Soft" PRs were earned via hand-timed relay splits by Danny (2:29), Cooper (2:27) and Lily (2:40) in the 4x800 and John (1:00), Daniel (1:04) and Cece (1:16) in the 4x400.
Establishing first time marks were Danny with a solid 11:58 in the 3200, Marin (2:57) and Paige (2:59) in the 4x800, and Marin (1:15) and Paige (1:13) in the 4x400.
Summit Milers Club:
Cain, Lukas and Ella earned 2025 Summit Milers Club status, which requires running under 5:00 (boys) and 5:45 (girls).
Ella - 5:11.78
Cain - 4:57.44
Lukas - 4:57.44
The Summit Girls won the meet!
Columbine was a great start to the season, blessed with sunny skies and still winds. It was a great opportunity to run some laps in spikes and get used to race efforts and race paces.
Times and places are below.
Highlights include Jay winning the mile and being the first to earn Miler's Club status this season! (Outdoor times only count.) His time puts him as the 5th fastest SHS miler ever and the 2nd fastest freshmen.
John's mile time is just 7 seconds from Miler's Club status and the 6th fastest freshmen time.
Malachi ran a great time in his first 800 and recorded the 5th fastest SHS freshman time ever. Jens had a 13-second PR in the 800 and recorded the 18th fastest SHS senior time.
Cain was 31 seconds faster in the 3200 than he was at this meet last year and entered the rankings as the 9th fastest SHS sophomore performance. Owen, in his first high school 3200, recorded the 8th fastest SHS freshman time.
Darby ran a 10-second PR in the 800 and earned the 11th fastest SHS Sophomore time. Lila ran a 9-second PR and is now the 16th fastest SHS Sophomore.
Lily in her first high school 1600 ran the 7th fastest SHS freshman time. Cece ran the 12th fastest junior time.
In the 3200, Adaline was just 10 seconds behind her PR from last season which is great for early in the season. It earned her the 7th fastest senior time. Lila, at a last minute decision, volunteered to run the 3200 in place of ill Ashley, and ran the 11th fastest Sophomore time in her first 3200.
-------------
Way out East in Boston, Josh and Ella ran at the New Balance Indoor Nationals.
Josh set a new SHS indoor mile school record of 4:24.56. Ella set a school record in the indoor mile of 4:57.20 and another school record in the indoor two mile of 10:28.34. Admittedly, Ella was also the first SHS girl to run an indoor mile and two-mile, but these are impressive times nonetheless, that will be difficult to beat.
A few hours driving time away, Lindsey competed in the Nike Indoor Nationals, where she ran 2:19.06 in the 800 and 5:23.98 in the mile. Those earn Lindsey the SHS indoor 800 school record and second in the indoor Mile.

The Ivory Moore Columbine Invite was a good first meet of the season for the small distance squad and overall SHS team. We treated this meet as a workout day - a day to get some time in on spikes and run some faster times on a rubber track. The distance runners raced in 3 or 4 events including at least one relay. Despite the focus being getting a lot of time in on spikes, we also had several great performances for early season.
Dom won the 1600 in a workmen's 4:45 after running a 53.5 split in the medley relay and a leg of the 4x800. Despite it being a "workout" meet, Dom's 1600 time already places him as the second fastest SHS Senior ever.
Dom has his eyes set on breaking the school records in the 800, 1600 and 3200 this year, all held by 2014 State Champion Liam Meirow.
Ella won the 1600 in 5:06, breaking the meet record set by NCAA All-American Lauren Gregory in 2017. Lauren placed second Saturday in the NCAA D1 Indoor Championship Mile after running her Arkansas team from 7th to 2nd in the DMR on Friday and contributed greatly to Arkansas winning the national championship.
The Girls' SMR first mark of the season was within 6 seconds of last year's State Qualifying mark.
Summit Track is on the path upwards. The girls placed 6th and the boys 12th in a field of mostly 5A teams, with the small distance squad contributing strongly to the points total.
