Life isn't about finding yourself. Life is about creating yourself.
Life isn't about finding yourself. Life is about creating yourself.
Provide outstanding training and opportunities for growth for athletes of all abilities. Commit to excellence in all we do. Develop athletes through the daily pursuit of excellence who compete at the highest level as a team and reflect positively on our school and community.
Grow mentally and physically via the discipline of competitive running into leaders with ATHLETIC CHARACTER and the self discipline, competitive fire and self belief to succeed greatly. Become CHAMPIONS by choosing to do difficult and uncomfortable things on a daily basis that most people are not willing to do.
Make the right choices every day that help us achieve our goals and grow as runners, leaders and teammates. Consistently do the harder right instead of the easier wrong.
You don't sign up for Cross Country because it will be easy. You sign up for it because it is hard. You don't want it to be easy.
Don’t be Satisfied - “The second you think you are good, you will never be great.”
SUMMIT CROSS COUNTRY
The SHS cross country team is looking for aspiring new runners to join our program.
You may be a good fit for our program if you perform tasks well when no one is looking, enjoy physical activity and don’t easily give up.
The discipline that comes with training your body translates to the classroom as well. You will find that many of the most successful and purposeful scholars at any school are cross country athletes.
Cross country season runs from August to the State Championship on November 1st.
Top individuals compete at the Nike Cross Regional Championship in Arizona on November 22nd. Our goal is to become one of the best cross country programs in the country and compete for selection to Nike Cross Nationals in Oregon. You can be a part of building that legacy.
Summer practice begins on 16 June. We practice daily at Summit High School and varied locations. Practice is at 8:00 a.m.
During school, practices start at 3:10 p.m. weekdays except 2:20 on Wednesdays. Saturday morning practice is normally at 8:00 a.m.
A scrimmage in mid August determines the varsity team for our first meet.
Average training distances for freshmen range between 2-4 miles. Meets take place in city parks, golf courses and school athletic grounds. High school races are 5 kilometers (3.1 miles) long.
You don't need to be a great runner right now. You do need to be willing to challenge yourself! You must have a desire to work hard.
We believe in our program, and want you to join. We know we can help you succeed and contribute to the success of the team.
The miles ahead of you may be the best, most fun and most valuable miles of your life, traveled with fellow students who value success, friendship, and integrity just like you.
We hope you take a risk and challenge yourself to compete in cross country.
Join us, and unleash the champion inside you! Life isn't about finding yourself. Life is about creating yourself. Join Cross Country and get creative!

Endurance racing is painful. It's not for the soft. Athletes who better tolerate the discomfort that comes with competing have an advantage over those with lesser tolerance. Former 5000-meter American record holder Bob Kennedy said it well: “One thing about racing is that it hurts. You better accept that from the beginning or you’re not going anywhere.”
To become a successful endurance racer you must "become comfortable being uncomfortable." As Tour de France champion Greg Lemond said, "It doesn’t get easier, you just go faster." Faster runners don't feel less pain, they just tolerate it better.
Athletes can increase their tolerance of race pain through training. Research shows hard workouts that induce discomfort increase pain tolerance.
Here’s the deal - once you develop a good work ethic, train consistently and learn how to push yourself it somehow isn’t that hard anymore. Somehow hard becomes “I've got this. This is what I do. This is who I am.”
This belief will benefit you in all aspects of life, for the rest of your life.
You compete for everyone on the team, not with each other. Working as a team makes it easier, more enjoyable, to face and embrace discomfort. Team success buoys all.
Greatness isn't for the chosen few. Greatness is for the few who choose.
What will you choose?
