The scrimmage this morning was excellent!
I didn't realize just how good until I finished entering and compiling the results a few minutes ago.
But first - thanks so much to the parents for bringing food and drinks for the potluck following. That was fun and I really appreciate the parents being there to support your athletes and to socialize following the scrimmage.
I expected all the food to disappear in a post-scrimmage hunger frenzy, but apparently the runners appetites were suppressed, as there was a lot remaining.
Cross Country is a difficult sport. It requires a lot of hard work and discipline. To make it appealing to more students and grow the team, it is import to highlight the rewards of running and the fun the team has. These social events go a long way towards that.
On to those highlights!
All eight boys who ran last year and this improved! The average improvement was 31 seconds.
Seven of the eight girls who ran last year and this improved. That average was 37 seconds!
The biggest boys improvement was 80 seconds by Owen!
The biggest girls improvement was 107 seconds by Milla!
The average time of the top 5 boys improved by 34 seconds - from 10:46 to 10:12!! (Will didn't run the scrimmage last year. Even if removed from this years times to equalize, the boys improved by 27 seconds!)
The average time of the top 5 girls improved by 24 seconds! (If you include Lindsey's time last year, even though Lindsey wasn't allowed to race at State, the girls still improved by 4 seconds.)
The improvement in the average of the top 7, so important for depth, was an even larger 46 seconds for the boys and 24 seconds for the girls
These stats may improve further when absent runners do the TT on Monday.
See the full results with lap splits here!
Review your splits. They can be very instructive!
Did you start too fast? (If your second 1000m was more than 10 seconds slower than the first, the answer might be yes.)
Could you have pushed harder in the crucial middle of the race? (If your third 1000m was faster than your second, possibly.)
Thanks to all the parents who came to the Team Time Trial. It was really great to have you there! Thanks so much to Kim Ramey for the pizza and to Betsey Kiehl for helping Coach Peltier and me with the timing. It was a fun night and we (coaches and athletes) really appreciate your support. Several big packs came through on the first lap, so it was great to have the video backup to get all the correct split times.
There were a lot of big improvements from last year! And a lot of BIG improvements. The most important lines in the screenshots of the results are at the bottom - the average times of the top 5 and top 7. The average time gives a good insight into the overall strength and depth of a team, especially the top 7.
I thought the girls Top 5 and Top 7 times would be better than last year, which was a huge improvement upon 2021. I thought the boys would be slower, but close to 2022, which was also much better than 2021.
I underestimated. WAY underestimated.
You ran much better than I dared hope for.
The girls top 5 average was 30 seconds faster than last year! And the top 7 was 32 seconds faster.
The boys top 5 average was 12 seconds faster than last year. The top 7 average was 40 seconds faster!
The strength of a team is measured in its depth, and our depth is MUCH improved this year!
Remember how I said you could do better than the pre-season rankings of 6th and 11th?
There is your first round of evidence.
I couldn't be more excited. Well done! That's a great start.
Let's build on it step by step with dedication and consistency. You can go a long way this year.
22 August 2022 was a great day for a time trial, with rain ending just before the race and cool temperatures. While the cooler temps compared to 2021 certainly helped both boys and girls to slightly faster times, they don't account for the huge improvements.
This year's top 5 times averaged 43 seconds faster than last year, and the top 7 averaged an even bigger 49 seconds faster. That means not just that our top 5 are much stronger than last year, but our depth is also much stronger. And that was with Cain "jogging" a post-HAPE recovery run and last year's 4 through 6 of Roan, Austin and Bryce missing. Another potential varsity runner, Gavin, was also away at MTB practice.
Individually, Liam had the biggest improvement from last year at 48 seconds. Next was Dom at a huge 36 second improvement (proportionately the largest, which is significant given he had the fastest time last year), nearly going sub-10 at 10:09. Landon improved by 22 seconds (remarkable since he trained more the summer of 2021 than 2022) and Josh by 7. All four boys who repeated from 2021 improved.
We won't run our top 7 at Battle Mountain. We will sit Zach (safeguarding his hip), Cain (recovering from HAPE) and Carter (at an important MTB race with Donovan). So the varsity at Battle Mountain will be Dom, Josh, Landon, Jens, Liam and Memphis.
The boys made a huge step up and the girls matched it! The top 5 average improved by a huge 42 seconds and the top 7 by an excellent 43 seconds. So just like the boys, not only is the girls top 5 much stronger, but so is the depth of the top 7. 4 of the top 5 girls were the same as last year, with Lauren replacing Sophia B and going nearly 2 minutes faster. Darby (Freshman) and Paige (away exchange student last year) finished 6th and 7th to earn the varsity spots for Battle Mountain. It was the first practice for Freshman Claire, so she just ran two laps, but showed signs she may be contending for a varsity slot in the future.
Ella had the biggest improvement of the entire day, edging out Liam by 3 seconds with a 51 second improvement. Considering her time last year wasn't shabby, that's remarkable. There were only 6 girls who repeated from 2021, and Adaline and Avery also improved, Adaline by 18 seconds and Avery by a strong 34 seconds. Cece, Logan and Sophia were close to last year's times and can certainly improve with consistent training.
All in all, both boys and girls showed that they are much stronger than last year. Not every team will be able to say that, so we've taken our first step towards improving on last season's results and toward our goal of both boys and girls qualifying for State!
