This was a brand new course for the Eagle Valley race after a three year absence. We didn't really know what to expect other than it was mostly grass and a little rolling. Thanks to heavy watering the night before the course was quite soggy in places. There was also a fair bit more concrete cart path running than expected. While I think it was only slightly rolling, others might disagree. The first mile was a bit net downhill and the second mile had a gradual climb and net uphill. That can certainly be seen in the difference between the 1st Mile and 2nd Mile splits.
On average, the girls were about 1:30 slower than at Liberty Bell due to the slower course. (Below in the "diff LB" column.) From that, it jumps out that Mila had a much improved race, being only 13 seconds slower than Liberty Bell. That was followed by Josie at 46 seconds and Claire at 51 seconds. The girls 1-7 split was just 4:51, over a minute improvement over Liberty Bell thanks to Mila's strong run.
The girls won the battle at every position. That is, our first girl was ahead of every other team's first girl, our second girl was ahead of every other team's second girl, etc. all the way to our fifth girl. It's impossible to lose when you do that, and again shows the importance of depth and a strong 3, 4, 5 as it lead us to winning by a strong 46 to 73 margin over 5A Fruita Monument and 11 other teams.
The boys averaged about a minute slower than Liberty Bell, but there was more variability. Donovan actually was faster by 2 seconds! Owen, Gavin, Max, Will and Cain also raced "comparatively faster" at 23, 43, 47, 50 and 54 seconds slower than Liberty Bell.
The boys gave Eagle Valley a real battle. The 1, 4, 5 finish of our top three put us one point ahead of Eagle Valley's 2, 3, 6. Eagle edged ahead with their 4 and 5, but Carter and Cain raced great and with their continued hard work and steady improvement I expect that to narrow by Regionals. At State it could very well play out differently.
It was awesome to see several packs of Summit runners out there pushing each other. Lily, Ashley and Cece came through the mile together on the heals of Avery. Mila, Adaline and Claire went through the mile together 30 seconds later, followed closely by Josie and Darby.
The boys had a tremendous front pack of Josh, Jay and Will together at the mile and 2 mile. At the mile, Carter, Cain and Lukas were slightly spread out, then it was another pack of Gavin, Owen, Jens and John running together.
Running as a pack and pushing each other is a great way to race better - and to train better, too!
Consistent hard work and a daily "can do" attitude incrementally lead to steady improvement. Those that are training hard are seeing the fruits of their labor. As a team we are improving and slowly seeing more success because so many of you are devoted and willing to work. Failure is not fatal and success is not final. Keep working, keep having fun and keep seeing your efforts paying off. Improving is fun!
Congratulations to Jay and Ella, the Eagle Valley Course Record holders, and to the whole team for your great races.

Notes from the Race Director:
Warm Up Area
Please do not warm up or run around near the finish line while kids have unread bibs on. The bibs have chips in them and we want to keep the finish line clear for the citizens race that begins prior to the high school races. Please warm up elsewhere on the course.
Golf Course Reminders
Remind your athletes to stay off of the greens and out of soft areas.
Dogs are permitted on leash if owners clean up after them.
Team Camps
Follow the signs to the east side of the Lake House. You are welcome to be across the bridge too. Please be mindful of private property around the course.
Spikes vs Flats
While I would choose to wear spikes myself, some may opt for flats. We have a few cart path crossings, but the only sustained pavement section will be in the final loop (about 200m).
Swimming
Kids are allowed to jump into the lake but swimming is at your own risk. Bring a towel. No inside facilities will be available to racers for changing or restrooms. We will have portas available.
Bus Parking
The bus will go to Red Hill Elementary School located at 100 Grundel Way, Gypsum, CO 81637 during the race and not return until the races are complete.
Starting Boxes
The racers listed aren't necessarily racing. They are just on their team's rosters. Something is wrong with the MileSplit database. The boys' times are not updated with Liberty Bell results. We appear to be much lower ranked than we actually our. By my calculation, we are actually 9 points behind Eagle Valley with Liberty Bell times included. The times in the Race Entries section below are correct. There it is apparent that we will have a tight race with Eagle Valley.
Top entries with seed times. These entries should more accurately reflect who is actually entered in the race versus the virtual meet.
