Going into this season, I thought we could be even stronger this year than last, despite the graduations of Josh, Will, Jens, Eva, Avery and Cece. The tremendous dedication through the summer laid the groundwork. Mountain Vista was a good start and Eagle Valley was another step up. Going into Liberty Bell, I thought we could do very well, but didn't put too much time into assessing just how well. I thought, "Let's just race and see what happens." Well, we took another huge step. Bigger than I could have imagined, certainly larger than I would have dared venture.
Boys placed second in the most competitive meet in the state, ahead of several teams that are nationally ranked. Jay set a new school record by 30 seconds. Lukas was just 7 seconds from it.
Girls beat the defending state champions and consensus #1 4A team in the State! Kayla was 11th in her first high school 5k.
The average time of our top 5, boys and girls, has now improved five years in a row!
Our depth - our 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th etc runners are the key to our strong team scores. Not just at the meets, but at practice on the day to day, pushing, encouraging and strengthening each other.
Your hard work is paying off. It’s taken years of effort. Now you are starting to reap the rewards. Let's keep working and keep improving!
Kayla finished 11th in her first ever high school 5k. Her time of 17:31 is the 4th fastest SHS time ever at Liberty Bell, behind Ella's Sophomore to Senior times but ahead of Ella's freshman time. Our top girls ran 5 of the fastest 13 SHS times and are 5 of the top 9 SHS girls ever at Liberty Bell.
Most of the girls ran well more than a minute faster than at Eagle Valley, with the biggest improvements from Maeve (2:43), Lucy (2:47) and Leah (2:59).
Lila had the biggest improvement from Liberty Bell 2024 at almost 2 minutes! (1:56), followed by Milla (1:44) and Sophie (1:00).
The average time of our top 5 was 18:54 and for the top 7 it was 19:26. That is a 16 second improvement for the top 5 and 6 seconds for the top 7. Improvement of our average time is most significant when it comes to State and NXR, because it reflects the strength of our 3, 4, and 5 and lower point totals in the competitive meets.
Simply Incredible! Second place team overall! Ahead of several nationally ranked teams. Jay breaks Dom's strong school record by 30 seconds! Every single varsity boy set new personal bests! The top 6 boys are all in the top 11 fastest SHS boys ever at Liberty Bell.
Odin had the biggest improvement from Eagle Valley (3:43), followed by two others improving by over 2 minutes - Gavin (2:23) and Thomas (2:00).
John had the biggest improvement from Liberty Bell 2024 at a huge 2:17, followed by Lukas (1:41), Thomas (1:38), Carter (1:23) and Danny (1:21).
Zander and Otis ran great in their first high school 5ks!!
Perhaps the most impactful stat - in terms of our chances at State and NXR - is that the average time of our top 5 was 15:28. That is 28 seconds faster than last year, 41 seconds faster than 2023 and 66 seconds faster than 2022! And the average time of our top 7 was 15:39, just 11 seconds more. We have great depth!
Dual Meet Record - If Cross Country were scored like individual dual meets, the boys would now have a record of 118 Wins and 1 Loss. The girls record would be 93 wins and 15 Losses - against all classifications in Colorado and Wyoming.
Power Merge Scores - coming soon - hopefully.
Class records - Some remarkable records were set! See them here! Click the tabs to see the class records.
Kayla now has the Freshman class record, ahead of Ella's 17:47 at Desert Twilight in 2021. She is now the 3rd fastest SHS girl ever, 6 seconds behind 2004 State Champ Whitney Anderson.
Crosby is second on the Freshmen list, after Jay and before Dom. He is 13th on the All Time List.
John had the biggest jump on the overall list, from 32nd up to 15th. Lukas moved up from 9th to 4th All Time. Owen from 13th to 7th.
Jay, Lukas, Owen, Johnny, John and Malachi dominate the Junior's list in 1st, 2nd, 5th, 9th, 12th and 19th all-time.
Sophie moved up to 8th and Lily up to 10th on the all-time list. Milla moved up 22 spots, from 36th to 14th. Leah slots in right behind Milla at 15th all-time.
Leah has the 8th fastest Freshman time. Sophie has the 3rd fastest Sophomore time. Lily and Milla are now the 4th and 5th fastest SHS Juniors ever.

The 4A Girls race was close! I include 5A teams Air Academy and Chaparral because they were previously both ranked in the top 20 nationally.
The boys 4A race really wasn't that close.

Summit Boys and Girls are in the Sweepstakes!
This was our first big test, and our first chance to run on a fast course - for comparison to other teams. We did great! Just look at the new 4A State rankings below to see how high we jumped. The boys jumped from 10th to 2nd! The girls jumped from 8th to 3rd!
----
The girls placed 16th in the Sweepstakes and were the third 4A team! We finished behind 4A teams Conifer and Timnath. We have a shot at beating them at State, but it will require a lot of work and improvement. We have great depth but they edge ahead of us in the 2, 3 and 4 spots. If we improve there, and I know we can, we can give them a battle.
The boys placed 8th in the Sweepstakes and were the first 4A team! Like the girls we have great depth. That is what has moved us ahead of Thompson Valley and Cheyenne Mountain. At the beginning of the year I thought the best we could do was 4th. Now it is clear we could be higher.
I am especially impressed looking deeper into the results. Both our JV teams and even our boys open team placed high, higher than dozens of teams from big 5A schools! The girls JV was 14th and the boys JV and Open were both 7th. We only had 14 girls and 20 boys total racing. Some of the 5A schools had over 60!
The average time of our top 5 girls was 2 seconds slower than last year, which included Lindsey. We were 24 seconds faster than last year's time without Lindsey (who couldn't race at State.) Our great depth shows in that the average time of our top 7 was 28 seconds better. 6 girls ran under 20 minutes. That is more than any other 4A school. Timnath and Conifer rank ahead of us because they each have several girls in the low 19s. If our girls can edge lower in the 19s, we can give them a run.
The boys dropped their top 5 average time 23 seconds - from 16:19 to 15:56. That's on top of the 15 second drop in 2023, from 16:34 to 16:19. Even better, the top 7 average time dropped 34 seconds! 3 Summit boys were under 16 minutes and 8 were under 17 minutes. That is a tremendous front end and better depth than any other 4A school besides Thompson Valley.
The 1-5 splits for both the boys and girls dropped again this year - which is fantastic - based on the stronger performance of the crucial 4 and 5 runners.
That is the fourth year in a row both the boys and girls improved their average time! Those strong team performances were based on a lot of great individual races. The details can be perused in the tables below. I'll hit a few highlights here.
9 of our returning boys ran faster than last year. Jay improved by 8 seconds for our fastest performance, Will also improved 8 seconds, Cain improved by 58 seconds, after a minute even last year, Carter 16 seconds, Lukas 34 seconds, Jens 56 seconds, John 36 seconds (still early in his recovery!), Max a huge 2:06 and Owen most of all in an incredible 2:16 improvement.
Ella improved by a second, Avery 14 seconds, Lily a big 35 seconds, Ashley 20 seconds, Cece 17 seconds and Milla a huge 1:55 (despite having a bit of an off race) from last year.
New personal bests were set by Avery, Ashley, Jay, Will, Cain, Owen, Malachi and Mason M., Carter, Lukas, Jens and Max. ALL of the freshmen ran faster than Eagle Valley for new personal bests.
These times made some major alterations to our top Liberty Bell and overall school records. The new top Liberty Bell times are below, and the all time records are in the Records tab.
Ella is the 2024 Liberty Bell champion after placing second her sophomore and junior years. Last year Ella became the first girl ever to run under 17 minutes twice at Liberty Bell. Now she has done it three times!
Avery, Sophie, Paige and Ashley moved up to, or entered the all time charts at the 11th, 14th, 17th and 18th positions. Those four plus Ella and Lily occupy one-third of the top 18 SHS rankings ever.
Sophie and Paige are now the 7th and 8th in the freshmen all time rankings.
Lily and Ashley enter the sophomore list in the 6th and 8th spots.
Ella, Avery and Cece are 1st, 8th and 14th in the all-time Senior list.
Jay moved up a spot to 3rd on the SHS all-time list, just behind Josh.
Will moved up a spot to 6th on the all time list.
Johnny enters the all-time list, in his first ever high school race, at an incredible 8th.
Cains huge PR jumps him all the way from 20th to 9th all time!
Owens even bigger PR springs him from 27th to 11th all time!
Cooper and Levi are now the 7th and 8th fastest SHS freshmen ever, with Bodhi 19th
Jay's time moves him to the very top of the Sophomore list, with Johnny at 5th, Owen 7th and Lukas at 9th. The sophomore boys hold 4 of the top 9 Sophomore rankings ever.
Cain and Carter are the 6th and 9th ranked Juniors.
Josh and Will are the 3rd and 5th seniors.
Dillon Benbow compiled all the 4A times and scored them as if there had been a 4A only meet. This is fantastic. Thanks, Dillon!
The Current Rank column is the 13 September Coaches Poll. (Girls #2 Cheyenne Mtn and #4 Holy Family - and Boys #1, 2 and 3 - Coronado, Thompson Valley and Cheyenne Mountain - didn't race at Liberty Bell.)

Summit Boys and Girls are in the Sweepstakes!
Liberty Bell was exciting as always, and our performances, especially the team performance, was outstanding!
The girls placed 10th in the Sweepstakes and were the first 4A team! That compares to 16th last year. Niwot looks to have a lock on first place, and Battle Mountain, Northfield, Discovery Canyon and Lewis-Palmer look strong. We look to have a real good shot at top 6 at State.
The boys placed 16th in the Sweepstakes and were the fourth 4A team! Last year the boys were 4th in Division 1. (Would have been first if Dom's time from the Sweepstakes were included.) The three 4A teams ahead of the boys - Coronado, Cheyenne Mountain and Eagle Valley are three of the top 4A teams in the State. Niwot, Battle Mountain and possibly Thompson Valley appear to be in the mix - meaning the boys look to have the potential of placing top 7 a State.
The conditions this year were more difficult than the ideal conditions last year. I wager they cost on average about 20 seconds in slower times due to the higher temps and dry, loose gravel. Despite this we had great team improvements.
The average time of the top 5 girls improved by 26 seconds, dropping from 19:36 to 19:10. That is a substantial improvement.
The boys dropped their scoring 5 average time 15 seconds, from 16:34 to 16:19. The 1-5 splits for both the boys and girls was reduced - which is fantastic - based on the stronger performance of the crucial 4 and 5 runners.
That is the third year in a row both the boys and girls improved their average time! Those strong team performances were based on a lot of great individual races. The details can be perused in the tables below. I'll hit a few highlights here.
Everybody improved substantially from Battle Mountain, of course. I like running a difficult course like Battle Mountain before Liberty Bell to build strength and mental toughness. Liberty Bell then feels fast and quick in comparison.
Jens had the biggest improvement on the boys side, a huge 4:11. Lila and Josie improved by 4:57 and 4:36 respectively!
All of our returning top 5 boys ran faster than last year, which is fantastic, especially given the aforementioned tougher conditions. Josh improved a big 51 seconds, Cain a minute even, Carter 40 seconds, Gavin 46 seconds and Jens a huge 1:47. These 5 boys all also PR'd (set a new personal best time) improving upon their fastest time from last year, which was the fast course at Grand Junction Regionals for most of them. Will joined this club, having not run at Liberty Bell last year but besting his Grand Junction time.
Ella, Cece and Claire were close to last year's times, with just Avery improving - a huge 57 seconds. This moved Avery up to a solid #3 for the girls. She was followed by excellent freshman performances by Ashley and Lily. Avery also beat her time from Grand Junction for a new PR.
These times made some major alterations to our top Liberty Bell and overall school records. The new top Liberty Bell times are below, and the all time records are in the Records tab.
Josh moving into the #2 spot, just 10 seconds behind Dom's time from last year, with his tremendous 12th place finish.
Jay earned the #3 spot, and fastest time by a SHS freshman, with his 24th place finish. Jay was the second freshman at Liberty Bell.
Will achieved the fifth fastest time, and fourth fastest individual with his 16:04 inaugural effort at Liberty Bell.
Our top 6 boys - Josh, Jay, Will, Carter, Cain, Lukas and Gavin - ran within the fastest 26 SHS times ever at Liberty Bell.
Ella placed second overall (currently the third fastest time in the nation) again, this time to 3A State Champion and 12th place finisher at NXN, Isabel Allori. Although 9 seconds slower than last year, this can be considered a better race given the slower conditions. Ella is the only girl to ever run under 17:00 twice at Liberty Bell.
Lindsey is now the second fastest SHS runner ever at Liberty Bell!
Avery, Ashley and Lily ran the 8th, 9th and 10th fastest SHS times ever at Liberty Bell.
The top 5 girls are all in the top 10 SHS runners at Liberty Bell. The top 3 boys are in the top 4 SHS ever.
Josh now has the second fastest SHS XC time ever. Faster than 2023 State Champion Liam Meirow. That is also the fastest time ever by a SHS Junior.
Jay is now the fourth fastest SHS XC runner ever, just two seconds slower than Liam. He is now the fastest freshman by 39 seconds!
Will's new PR puts him at 7th all time and 4th junior.
Carter moved up 7 positions to 16th all-time and is currently the 8th fastest sophomore.
Cain slots in right behind Carter at 20th all-time and 9th sophomore. Gavin is close behind at 31st and 11th Sophomore.
Lukas is another freshman high on the board, at 22nd all time and 6th freshman.
Owen cracks the top 50 all time and 17th freshman.
Ella now has the fastest junior time by almost 2 minutes.
Lindsey is now the fourth fastest SHS runner ever and has the third fastest senior time, with second well in reach.
Avery jumped all the way from 23rd to 12th ever and is now the sixth fastest junior.
Ashley and Lily made a splash at 20th and 22nd on the all time list and 9th and 12th freshmen.
We are in the Sweepstakes! Boys and Girls!

Wow! Where do we begin? I suppose with the two new school records! At SHS, we aren't satisfied with a new school record, we set two on the same day!
Dom ran 15:09 and improved his best time, set last year at the Garmin Running Lane National Championship by 26 seconds. His 15:09 school record is 38 seconds faster than he ran at Liberty Bell last year and bests Liam Meirow's previous school record set in 2013 by 20 seconds. Of note, Liam went on to win the State Championship that year! Dom's time is also in the top 25 ever run at Liberty Bell, #8 in the State and #1 in 4A!
Ella ran 16:46, 1:29 faster than last year! That lowered the school record of 17:25 set by Whitney Anderson in 2004 when she won the State Championship by 39 seconds! It was an improvement of 61 seconds on her PR set last year at Desert Twilight. It is the 4th fastest time ever run at Liberty Bell. Her time puts her at not just #2 in the State and #1 in 4A, but also #2 in the nation!
More important, from an overall aspect, was the outstanding team performance.
EVERYONE improved on their Cheyenne Mountain times, setting new Season Bests. Some of the biggest improvements:
Chloe improved by 4:47

Josh PR'd by 0:14
Results as of 4:00 pm on Sunday still aren't complete, so I have no times for Maisy and Claire.
The boys Top 5 average time improved by a big 0:37 compared to last year. That's an average improvement of 37 seconds per runner! Even more significantly, the Top 7 (important for team depth) improved by a bigger 1:19.
The girls Top 5 average time improved by a huge 1:09 and the Top 7 average time by 1:19!
Significantly, big improvements are happening in the all important 3rd through 5th positions, where faster times impact the team score more than improvements at 1st and 2nd. (See - the standard deviation bell curve and here.)
The girls were 16th of 22 teams in the Sweepstakes division but more importantly the first 4A team! Last year we were in Division 2, this year they skipped Division 1 and bumped the girls all the way to the Sweepstakes.
The boys were 4th of 23 teams in Division 1 and would have won if Dom's time (he ran in the Sweepstakes) were included! In fact, if we had run in the Sweepstakes we would have been very close to Eagle Valley for second 4A team. Our first 3 boys were faster than Eagle's first 3 and our 4th just one second behind their 4th. It was only at 5th that they were significantly ahead. We will have to wait for the mega-merge to see if we would have beaten Eagle Valley.
The boys ran 4 of the top 10 SHS times ever at Liberty Bell. The girls ran 5 of the top 9 and 9 of the top 20 SHS times at Liberty Bell.
