There are several changes to our 2023 meet schedule!
Our first meet will be the Mountain Vista 2-mile. This is a a true invite only meet, with 12 of the top teams in the State. We are invited based on our performance last year. There will be a Freshmen/Sophomore division where we will run all of the Freshmen and several of the Sophomores, even if it looks like they will be Varsity later in the year.
The Battle Mountain Husky Invite is normally our first meet of the year, but this year it moves a week back to the Friday afternoon of Labor Day weekend. We will grill burgers after the races on the shore of Cross Creek before families set off on Labor Day trips.
The Eagle Valley meet returns after an absence of a few years, this time at a new course, the Siena Valley Club.
Our third new meet of the season will be the Northfield Nighthawk the morning of 23 September.
We won't be racing the Cheyenne Mountain Stampede, St. Vrain or Dave Sanders this year. It is good to try to new races, new courses and face new teams.
Nike Southwest Regionals on 18 November is our out of state, low-elevation, fast-course focus race. Other out of state, high caliper opportunities are the Eastbay Midwest Regional on 25 November in Wisconsin and the Running Lane National Championship on 2 December in Alabama. Unless the team or individuals qualify for Nike Nationals also on 2 December in Oregon!
A hint of things to come:
From Colorado High School Sports on 11/2/22 - The 2022 4A State Story:
"Girls: Summit, another western slope school, showed well enough to finish sixth (at State). Depending a little on whose projections you read, that finish appears to beat the projections by a little. The Tigers are a rising program. We would all do well the pay attention to what happens with this team the next couple of years."
"Boys: Eagle Valley's Jake Drever graduates, but brace yourself for what's coming up behind him. Battle Mountain has Brunner and Middaugh back next year. That's a scary thought. Scarier still is the idea of how much the rest of the team can close up ranks behind them given another year of training in the Rob Parish system." (Coach Hagen comment: I agree that Eagle Valley and Battle Mountain look to be strong in 2023. We graduate three seniors. Returning to another runner up, or better, finish at Regionals will be difficult, but not out of reach. EV and BM are picked as top 6 teams at State next year. We need to give them a run.)
10/24/22: Summit Middle School boys cross-country team wins state for the first time in school history
From MileSplit on 11/23/22: Top Returning 4A Girls Cross Country Teams For 2023
"On paper it looks like Summit is about to make the jump. They return the third-fastest squad, led by defending state champ Ella Hagen. Summit owns a 1-5 average of 19:24, and a 1-5 split of 3:50 - compliments of Hagen's fiery front-running."
