Sand Dollar

The subject of my project is supposed to be a sand dollar with some things added that you would find in the ocean around the rims like kelp, waves, fish, and just an extra space with a design. I used clay for the actual project and also scratchboard to sketch my idea. I also used a scratching tool to carve out the design in the clay. I really like the ocean and once I decided to make my clay tile a circle I knew instantly I wanted to make a sand dollar.

I used the Sgraffito technique which is decorating technique for pottery, but we used it for a clay tile. I changed a lot to be honest. At first I had just the sand dollar, then I also only just had the sectioning on the outside without the ocean like things.

Right after I chose to make my clay a circle I went straight to scratching my design of a sand dollar because I wanted to have something like ocean themed, especially since Summer is on it's way. I love the beach, I love finding shells, walking the beach, anything that involves the water I'm into which is another reason why I chose to do a sand dollar. Overall, my project came out a lot better than I thought it would, but I would make the kelp look more like kelp.
