For this artwork, the main idea that guided me through this was my idea sketch of a flower that I thought of to have an equal amount of white and black for this piece of clay.
The material I used for this artwork was a black underglaze to coat the clay tile before carving the pieces away. I used carving tools that scratched the surface of the clay tile to reveal the clay's white color over the black underglaze. In the end, I sealed everything with a clear glaze to make it shiny and stronger.
During the process of this artwork, I first had the idea of just stripes behind the flower. However, when I began carving away it seemed like the flower wasn't as obvious as well as not enough white was showing. I then changed it to a checkerboard for a better contrast on the clay.
