Spacestroid
9" x 6"
Graphite pencil, oil pastels, India ink, watercolor paper, and watercolor paint.
For this artwork, the main idea that guided me through my artwork was basing the India ink drop off an asteroid. I'm trying to show outer space with an astroid on fire coming straight to Earth.
The materials I used for this drawing were graphite pencils, watercolor paint, oil pastels, and watercolor paper. I used the graphite pencil to lightly sketch out the idea of what I was doing which ended up only outlining the planets. After that, I started with watercolor paint and painted the whole background a light black by making sure there was lots of water on the brush so the 'asteroid' was still showing and splattered white watercolor paint on top. Then I watercolored the planets not very neat because right after, I outlined everything with the oil pastels to define the details and put some sort of gradient.
During the process of my drawing, I had a few ideas that the Indian ink drop could make. In the beginning, I saw a few different animals that I could've shaped out, more specifically an owl if I put the paper vertically. Eventually, by turning the paper in various angles I saw an asteroid flying through space. I put the Earth in the bottom corner to make it look as though the asteroid was heading towards it. I put the sun really big on the right side of the paper to show the size and make it more realistic and added a little Saturn planet just for the fun of it. Last, I decided to add lots of oil pastels around the asteroid to add more of the fire effect and make it look as though it was going very fast.
