Scratchboard, Tools

This is the scratchboard piece that I created, based off of a picture taken of me and my team after we won the Lobster Trap Tournament this past season. We beat all boys teams in this tournament to win and it was a huge victory for us. This represents all of our friendships and our shared love for the game.

This piece was of course done on scratchboard and I used a few different designs to create the different textures and parts of this piece. One tool was a metal blade and was very good for the large white parts as well as the small details, this was the tool that I used the most for this piece. Another was a wooden tool with metal prongs, I used this to create texture with things such as the hair and skate blades. Lastly, I used the tool with many bristles at the end for shading areas and part that I wanted to be mostly light, but with a gray hue as well.

At first I had chosen a completely different photo to use, but it was very simple and had no meaning to me, so I decided to challenge myself and a more complicated picture that I really liked. This picture is very detailed and has lots going on in it, which I feel that I portrayed pretty well throughout this piece. Because it's scratchboard, you're scratching away the parts that are white, which is very different from most mediums. This created some challenges and the precision needed for the small details made for a very long process. However, I like the way that it turned out and I'm happy that this is the image I chose to create.
