Historical Inspired Coil Pot

This project started with a research portion by going through some different historical pieces from different cultures. By going through some different form of pots and looking at different styles, I eventually came upon this one, which is a Chinese neolithic piece from somewhere around 50-47 BCE. I really like the simplicity of the design, while still making it detailed and beautiful with the glaze pattern. I decided to try to replicate this piece as well as I could by using the coil pot technique that we practiced with a formative pot.

Once again I started by using the clay machine that presses out clay and used the circles at the bottom which gave me lots of coils to work with. Right off the bat I realized that I had to make my coils longer because the width of my pot was so much bigger. The trickiest part about my pot was that I had to pay close attention to where the shape got wider and went out and then when it came back in and the angle at which it did. I tried my best to match the shape well, but go in a different direction with the glaze. The glaze was actually a fail at first that ended up working out in the end and I like the final product. I tried putting a dark glaze on it, but I didn't realize that it was a lot thicker than many of the other glazes so I went to put on 3 layers without diluting it at all. But once it began to dry, many parts of it started to flake away and not stick. I decided to improvise and create a design by scraping some of the glaze off and leaving the rest on. I like the end result and I'm proud that I was able to take on a larger, more time consuming piece and still be happy with the final result.
