After learning how to use the soft slab technique in the formative project before, which was a light blue mug with a circle pattern. After finishing that I felt pretty confident with this technique and chose to go into this next set with a bit more of a plan. I decided to do a set that would all fit together as 4, but could be broken down into 2's as well. I knew that I wanted to do two one color and the other two a different color, two one design and the other two a slightly different one, and have one of each color have a handle and the other one not. I chose the bolt and nail designs because I liked the way they fit together and I had also decided that I wanted to give this one to my dad and I figured that he would like this design. I also chose yellow and blue because I know that he like the color yellow and I felt that these two shades especially fit very well together.
Again I started with flat slabs and instead of adding the design imprint while they were still flat, I chose to wrap them around the container first and create the shape before then pressing down the nails and bolts while the clay was still around the container. I felt that this was most efficient and I thought that it worked out well too. For the two that I made a handle for, I chose a very basic shape to stick with and attached it on to the sides again once the pieces had a bottom and were off of the containers. I found that I often had to go around with my design tools and imprint them again in the same places because I messed up the design in a few places while handling it. I also had to smooth around in the areas that I placed the handle on. After being completely finished glazing and being able to see them all together, I'm very happy with how they turned out and I like the set pattern that I chose. My dad also really likes the pieces and he drinks his coffee out of the mugs often, and I'm glad they're being put to use and are being seen often.
