Extended Blind Contour

Extended Blind Contour Project

Pencil, pen, watercolor, oil pastel

12" x 9"

Some ideas that are evident are just the three components to this piece. We were to draw a hand gesture, a portrait (mine was a self portrait), and a still life. I did a peace sign, self portrait and then I turned my paper sideways and drew a candle holder. This relates to my life because the still life I used was on my dining room table and it was a self portrait and my own peace sign.

The work was made by first doing the blind part using pen, and that was of course a total mess. I then used pencil to define, fix, and add on some lines to the pen. I also added the entire exterior design by using pen. I then went in with watercolor to use random color on the outside, filling in the triangles. And finally, I used oil pastels to add a design on the candlestick holder, and on the face.

The process I used is quite simple, starting with the blind part. I started by staring first at my peace sign, then in the mirror, then straight forward at the candlestick holder. I would do the best I could, not letting my pen leave the page and making the best lunes possible. Then, once with outline was finished, I just took a look and made the changes that I could. I used a design with triangles on the outside and did some circles on the face to try and make some random circles fit in more. Another step I could take could be adding more color to the face, or maybe taking a whole new approach with the color scheme or design theme.
