The Final Piece

12" x 9"

Colored Pencil, Sharpie, Ink, Bristol Board

This piece is about conveying the importance and impact that being an organ donor can have. The inspiration was simply the thought of people being puzzles and a certain part of the body is like a piece to the puzzle. While one person might be missing a piece, another person has the chance to save a life by donating a piece that they can no longer use or don't need. The person on the right has the chance to donate a piece and the person on the left is in need of that final piece, this all shows how important organ and tissue donation can be.

To create this piece I used a variety of different materials, on bristol board paper. The writing and outlining are all in sharpie ink, the bottom landscape is charcoal, the trees are ink, and the sunset background and puzzle pieces are in colored pencil.

I began with the idea for my phrase first, to go along with the whole notion of puzzle pieces and completing someone else's puzzle through organ and tissue donation. From there I figured out how I wanted to lay everything out, how I could use colors to better portray the story and the background I would use. While creating this piece I realized how times consuming small lines and details are, as well as how tedious it is trying to handwrite in a certain font. The way I did the puzzle, was to draw a rectangle puzzle out, then draw a body over it, and erase the excess. This took quite a bit of time, but I'm glad I did that because I like how it turned out.
