Art History Inspired

Key of Hope

11" x 8"

Graphite Pencil, Colored Pencil, Ink

My assigned art history inspiration was Salvador Dali and surrealism. My chosen art history movement was cubism. I incorporated surrealism by using random objects and a message behind the piece that makes you think deeper. It looks strange at first like surrealism but actually has meaning. Cubism was used in the key with breaking it up into shapes and shading them different colors.

I first started out with pencil and then I outlined the key and points in sharpie and once I was finished with that I used colored pencil for color. The message behind this artwork is that the key in the center represents hope and a way out, and in the background there are people falling down. The key would mean an escape from the evil of the world and a gateway to hope and peace. But the key is guarded and hard to get to and people feel like they are falling while trying to get to it.

I like how this turned out, I feel like there is a deeper message behind it which is important and I like that it makes you think when you look at it. I also like the color choice and I think it contrasts well. I do see both cubism and surrealism in this piece as well and I'm happy with the art history movements and artists that I chose to be inspired by.
