Sgraffito Tile

For this sgraffito tile project, we all first learned how to create a slab of clay using the slab roller. Once we made the slabs, we let it dry until leather hard while brainstorming and sketching ideas for our design. I made a couple different sketches but ended up settling on the one that looks very similar to my tile. Once leather hard, I painted on three coats of green underglaze and once it was completely dry, I transferred my design from my sketch onto the slab by using a ballpoint pen. By tracing it, a slight indent was created for the whole sketch so that I could see where to carve out. I then carved my design out and once fired, added three layers of clear glaze, making it come out shiny after it's final firing.

At first I wasn't sure about my design or how realistic it looked, and still I think there are parts that I could've done better, but overall I like the idea. I also think that the color fits the design well which adds to it. Last year in foundations, we had practice with sgraffito tiles which I think helped me with this one. It was a little bit different last year and we learned by using scratchboard first, but there were a lot of similarities.
