Negative Hand Space Drawing

9" x 11"

Printer paper, graphite.

Zen Tangle Value Strip

7" x 5"

Bristle paper, graphite, sharpie.

Negative Space Leaves

11" x 14"

Print making paper, graphite, gel pen, sharpie, blender tool.

For each of these three drawings, I focused on negative space. I drew a still life of my hands and I only outlined them, I drew zen tangles that slowly had less and less negative space, and I drew an outline of leaves and drew inside the negative space.

For materials, I used graphite to draw on the negative space hands and leaves, but I only used sharpie for the zen tangle. For the hand, I used printer paper and graphite only. For the leaves, however, I used a gel pen to outline the border, and I used a blender tool for the fire. The process for the negative space leaves and hands was quite similar. For the hand, I just drew the outline only of my hand and added some shading. Same for the leaves, I only outlined the leaves, then I drew a pattern in the negative space. For the zen tangle, I drew a claw or a scythe sort of shape to fill in with zen tangles. I outlined it in sharpie, then drew zen tangles on the inside with just sharpie, slowly reducing the amount of negative space used.

The zen tangle, I wanted to not draw just ten boxes in a line, I wanted to make it a bit different, I came up with the idea of making a scythe or claw-like outline for the ten zen tangles to go in. From there, I just drew patterns and other things inside the shape. The negative hand space drawing was pretty simple, I just drew an outline of my hand, nothing too special there. But the leaves drawing was not as straightforward. I picked a few leaves from outside, differing in save and shape that I thought would be good for what I was doing. I then arranged them where there were at least five negative spaces left, and outlined the leaves. After this, I had to think for a while about what I could draw inside the negative space. I decided to add fire gushing out from behind the leaves, adding an interesting feeling to the drawing.
