Candy Still Life

9" x 12"

watercolor paper

Water color and graphite.

For these two pieces, I used color for shading and little to no graphite, and other darker tools. I used green and blue to convey shadows in the shaded spheres and used the color of the candy wrappers to convert shadows in the candy still life. The shaded spheres were more of a getting used to kind of project, just playing with colors and seeing how they interact and how I can use them. The candy still life, however, was not as freethinking and playing around, and was pretty straightforward for the most part. I just drew the colors that I saw in the picture of the candy, pretty simple.

For materials on these two pieces, I used markers, colored pencils, and watercolors for the colors in them, and I used a bit of graphite to outline. I would outline lightly with graphite and make guidelines for where to color in the future, a fairly simple process. I would finish with coloring in all the details with whatever medium I was using.

In these two pieces, I went through a fairly similar process. For the colored spheres, I drew value with color in spheres, but it was imaginative, while as the colored candy I drew from life using color to show value. I started out with a rough outline in very light graphite using something like an HB or a 2H pencil. I would then start with the lighter color and shade the whole sphere or candy. I would then slowly add the darker color in layers to shade, then use the lighter color to fill in any white space or irregularities. I finished these off with drawing shadows in color, then I was done. In the colored spheres drawing, I experimented with trying to figure out how to shade with colors, and when drawing the colored candy, I used this experience to better my drawing. The colored candy drawing was pretty simple though, I just used color to draw what I saw.
