Artist Statement

For the fishing piece, I was inspired by the ocean, I chose the weaved pattern because it reminded me of fish and I chose the net because it reminded me of a fishing net, I chose the sponge at the bottom because it made me think of sea sponges. For the Pride piece, I was inspired by pride month so I chose to incorporate rainbows. I wanted to appreciate the LGBTQIA+ community in my piece and include that it doesn't matter who someone else loves because it's their life.

In order to make the fishing piece I just put some dark blue ink onto the Gelli slab using a brayer and then I found some interestingly textured things and placed them on top of the inked slab. I was able to make three prints from this, the first one didn't grab much ink because the objects block it, the second one which is the one I used picked up the rest of the ink, and my third one was a ghost print and I liked to but not enough to use it. The Pride piece was made by me coloring on the Gelli slab with markers and then placing a piece of paper on top, this made a print but I wanted the colors to be softer so I did a ghost and I liked it much better. I wanted it to look more blended so I use a brush with water and smoothed out the marker. Once that was dry I added detail and words using a sharpie.

The wasn't much prep that went into this but there was a little bit of experimenting when I tried to smooth out the marker. The only practice I really had was when I was watching Ms. Medsker show me how to do it, from there I just winged it and I'm pretty happy with the way the fishing one came out but I'm not as happy with the pride piece even though I love the message.
