A Black and White Grave

Materials- H pencil, gel pen, Sharpie

Size - 12"X9"

The Ideas that I think are visually evident in my piece are the ideas of death and the beauty in between it. I wanted it to be clear that it is representing death as well as something good. I wanted the skull to represent someone dying and joining their family which are the ghosts and the tombstone is supposed to also represent the recently dead one that's why they're on clouds, they're floating up. This piece doesn't have a huge personal connection to me other than the death date on the grave. Death is something that has affected me a lot over life and when I made this I was feeling down therefore the theme of death.

I made this by first identifying the two biggest ink blots and decided to draw a sketch of a skull in pencil. Then I decided to draw the clouds to keep the skull floating and then some random clouds. I randomly then sketched out a family of ghosts. I thought everything looked to empty and I needed to do something with the left over flowers so I chose to draw a grave to match the theme in my image. Then I made the miscellaneous splatters the center of a flower and I liked it so I made a lot more. Then I thought it looked very empty so I started making the background black but didn't fully color them because I wanted to do the details later instead but i really liked the messiness of them not being exactly colored in.

This was a very go with the flow type of piece and I just added things as I went along. I made sure nothing looked to empty. This was very experimental because I didn't know how to draw a skull, originally I shaded the clouds and about half of the details were just last minute ideas. Originally I wasn't planning on doing more than the skull and clouds and them use water colors but I eventually added more and made the decision to make it black and white. If I continued or re did this piece I'd make less clouds around the skull, I'd make the skull better I'd make less ghosts or get rid of the gravestone because it looks crowded, and lastly I'd make the placement of the flowers better.
