With this piece I wanted to show what society considers the perfect body; skinny, large breasts, and a large butt. I wanted to show how that sort of thing doesn't matter because a perfect body isn't going to last forever, we're all going to become old and wrinkly before we die. I was really motivated to make this piece even though the amount of time I spent started to frustrate me. I was really passionate about showing how stupid and superficial people are. Even when I would bring the sculpture around school people would make comments about her or stare at her, her, being the sculpture which my friend named Chrysanthemum.
This work was made by me first coming up with the idea of doing a female body, I had been wanting to incorporate one into my work all year but I figured since this is our last project it'd be a great thing to do. After I had my idea I made an annotated sketch on a piece of paper that was pretty close to my final project. Then I was able to start my armature using tons of newspaper and about 7 rolls of tape, this piece was the longest part of the project because of the size of my sculpture. I was able to start with a cardboard cutout of the body and then build it up from there which helped the process a bit. Once that tedious process of taping newspaper was over I was finally able to start glueing my leaves on which also took a while. I had to gather lots of leaves from trees outside and getting many bug bites in the process. Then I had to glue them on but once I did that they started to die pretty fast and when apply the hot glue it started to kill the leaves because of the high temperature. I eventually got that done with only a few minutes before I had to leave for school and a couple burns on my from the glue. I finalized it with two flowers for the nipples.
In order to get a good sketch and the right muscle placement on the body I had to look at some female bodies on google and some of my friend were good for giving me references of backs and stomaches. I re-did my sketch so many times because I just didn't think it looked realistic enough. The biggest obstacle I faced was the amount of tape I needed, I even had to go out and buy some in order to finish my sculpture. This whole thing was pretty much an experiment because I've never done a sculpture like this before, it definitely was unexpected how long this would take me. I underestimated the amount of time and work that goes into make a sculpture. The form of my sculpture didn't change a lot from my idea to my final piece but I was able to make the muscles of the body look more realistic because of peer feedback. Overall, I'm the most proud of this piece and I think it's a great way to finish my year.
