I think you can tell that I wanted this to look like a comic book but I wanted to background to look surreal. This relates to me because I chose the two art forms I wanted to be inspired by. I wanted pop art so I did a portrait like Andy Warhol but I wanted it to look like a comic book like Roy Lichtenstein so I mixed that with surrealism, that's why I added the tie-dye spiral and the mushrooms because they don't belong there. I actually choose to do Princess Diana because I knew I had to do an amazing icon so my friend suggested Princess Diana.
I started by grinding because I did use a reference photo and then I painted her shoulders, and then her hair, and then her face, lastly I did the background because I was torn between this and a Piet Mondrian pattern in the back. After that, I used highlighters to make the spiral-like I had seen a video of a girl doing. To finish everything off I added mushrooms growing out of her shoulders. I also made sure to outline everything in black and make her look as comic book-y as I could.
To create this I had to mix all sorts of different colors and I toyed with the idea of using non-realistic colors like Andy Warhol often did but I decided that I wanted to make her have similar colors as she does in real life. This project went through so many different ideas at one point I wanted to cut paper and make this look like cubism, I had to completely redo her face because I had a very red-looking skin tone that wasn't even close to matching the neck, and as I mentioned earlier I had to make the decision not to have a Piet Mondrian inspired background. My next steps could be making the eyes look more proportional, making the mushrooms look better, and fixing the areas of the highlighter that melted together from my fingers while I was trying to paint the mushrooms.
