Artist Statement

An idea that you can see in my final piece is I like things to be colorful, I wanted it to look like the candy was spilling out and the fish were in a little school. In my spheres, there wasn't a story behind them. In my candy piece, I know you can tell that I struggled to grasp the idea of making it look 3d. For my orange sphere, I used an orange and a peach-colored pencil to create the realistic sphere look but I did have a hard time placing the highlights. The spheres didn't relate to me except for the sunset one because I've always been drawn to sunsets. The title of my candy pice relates to me because I used to always play candy land as a kid and when I won I'd get some sort of candy as a prize.

For my purple sphere I used purple watercolor, I had trouble with this because I couldn't make it look even and the paper was too wet so even once it dried layering was difficult. For the Sunset Sphere, I used an orange, peach, and pink highlighter because I didn't have any markers, I had trouble with making everything look smooth because highlighters aren't very opaque and I had to fade the colors. For the green sphere, I used a green colored pencil, a green highlighter, and green watercolor layering these three materials was really tricky because I wanted it to look blended but I wasn't really able to do that because of how saturated with materials it became. For the candy piece I used a variety of colored pencils and a pen to outline things, I didn't really get how to make non-spherical things look 3d.

With my orange sphere, I started by figuring out where I wanted my highlights to be, once I figured that out I roughly marked with the orange pencil where that should go and then with the peach pencil where I should make it lighter. At the beginning of this piece, it was just light scribbles that I turned into a semi-realistic sphere. My next step could be adding some sort of background or adding something to/around the sphere. With the purple sphere, I again mapped out where I wanted my highlight to be except this time I couldn't just lightly scribble where I wanted my darker colors so I dove right in and where it needed to be lighter I just quickly dipped my brush in water to desaturate the color. This evolved quite a lot because before I added layers it was a pretty wet mess and would occasionally bleed. My next steps could be adding another layer to smooth things out. With the Sunset Sphere, I started with my highlight and then I started with the orange color and slowly faded into peach and then into pink. My next step could be making the highlight looks more prominent. For the candy piece, I started by drawing the packages and then moved onto the candy. This project evolved by me trying to make parts of the wrapper look darker to show the folds and then making the Sweet Tarts look as spherical as I could considering their size, I also tried to add a shadow to the Swedish Fish. My next step could be adding more highlights and shadows and details to make it look more realistic.
