Artist Statement:
I think the main idea that guided my artwork would be the ocean. The ocean has many different shapes of islands and anything can be an island as long as it's land. The swirl would be a whirlpool because the ocean has many of those and that's what I saw when I looked at the sharpie drawing.
For this drawing I first used sharpie to do the blind drawings and then I used graphite pencil to lightly sketch out what I wanted to be different things and lastly I colored the drawing with oil pastels.
When I first started trying to transform my blind drawings I didn't really see anything until I looked really closely at the swirls in the middle and thought that maybe I could make it into a whirlpool. This whirlpool idea sprouted the rest of the painting and made me think of an ocean landscape becuase islands can be any shape really and the swirls work pretty well as a whirlpool.
