Flower Garden (Art History/Midterm Project)

Acrylic Paint, Canvas

Artist Statement:

The main idea or ideas that guided my artwork is the artwork of Helen Frankenthaler and Mary Cassatt. These are two amazing artists and what I noticed most about their work is that Helen Frankenthaler's use of color and Mary Cassatt's short, choppy brush strokes. While creating this artwork I knew I wanted to include these techniques.

To make this artwork I used different colored acrylic paint on an unprimed canvas, but I also used graphite pencil to sketch on the canvas before adding color.

During the process of creating this artwork, I had no idea what colors I was going to use until it was time to color different parts. I went through a lot of trial and error with the colors as some wouldn't show up as well with the background. I also didn't really know how I wanted to include Helen Frankenthaler's use of color into my artwork so I decided to go with her diluted paint pouring method for the background and have the flowers be Mary Cassatt's short, choppy brush strokes painting technique. Eventually, I had decided what I was going to do for the whole thing and that is when the work started to move more smoothly.
