Roots in the Soil

7 inches by 10 inches

The story behind this drawing is that I originally saw a head but then I turned the paper around and I saw a stem and roots which I found to be quite easy to sketch from. It relates to my life because I like nature and the natural occurrences found in nature.

I started this drawing with a number 2 pencil and an eraser but then I switched to a marker but realized that it would be too difficult to shade with markers and switched to colored pencils.

I started the project with a sketch of the ground and the girl kneeling before the flower, I wanted the roots to show and symbolize that there is more to something than what you originally see. I was originally going to have her sitting before a grave symbolized with that flower but switched to a normal flower. I wanted the girl to have no facial features because I can’t draw faces that well, I then added color to the roots and the sky and ground, I finished with the bones under the ground. My art evolved when I added the shading to the flower and the roots making them stand out more. My next steps would be to add more color to the ground and the sky to make them stand out more.
