Taking inspiration from personal experience, living in and around Sydney Harbour, my work “Terminus” focuses on the Manly ferry. The NSW government has announced its plan to take the Freshwater class of ferries out of service.
The Manly ferries, and the service they provide, go back to 1855, “seven miles from Sydney and a thousand miles from care”, and are world-famous and much loved. A Sydney icon.
My expressive treatment of the sky and water is abstract and playful, reflecting my love of nature. My style takes a “thousand miles from care” view. Opposing the abstract and playful, I incorporate a sense of detail to the ferries to evoke the emotion of all the passengers who have experienced the journey. I have used a palette knife to create the abstract flowing style and a paintbrush to create the finer details. The title “Terminus” has multiple meanings, first is that of the wharf, the terminals where ferries load and unload passengers. The second is to reflect on the journey itself. And the third is to highlight the NSW government’s attempt to terminate this symbolic part of Sydney life.
My major work aimed to celebrate and commemorate this icon.
