DRAMA

The Country Women's Apothecary

Group Devised Performance (Samaya, Flore, Tara, Philipa)

Our group wanted to create a lighthearted piece of theatre that encourages the audience to have a laugh.

We explored society's attitudes towards elderly women, in an episodic comic piece, using a range of stylistic devices and conventions. Our work manipulates symbol and creates tension, as the audience anticipates the characters's next move. With transformational acting, highly physical movement and continuous shifts in time frame, the contrast between the police officer's loud and deep voice, and the grandma’s soft and quiet voice, our play engages the audience’s imagination. We also wanted to add an element of surprise, and we achieved this throughout the performance, and particularly in the final moments when the four female character’s embodiment and tone shift from gentle “Bless your heart” to assertive and unexpectedly aggressive “What a flaming Galah that one was”. The shift in tone and characterisation is shocking, creating another final moment of humour and ultimately leaving the audience to reflect on the ongoing mistreatment of women and particularly elderly females, and comically highlighting the dangers inherent in underestimating the female of the species. Ideally the audience should have a stimulating and cathartic experience.
