My body of work draws on my interest in the expressive nature of music and its interaction with our different sensory inputs; visual, tactile and auditory. When combined, as they are in music, these inputs evoke a range of powerful emotional responses.
In my main photographs, I have presented this concept using three contrasting music styles from different periods of human history: classical, folk and jazz. Each photo and corresponding cube in my triptych feature a recognisable instrument as synonymous with one of my chosen musical styles. The bassoon being an iconic classical instrument, piano accordions are much-loved folk symbols, and the saxophone, with its symbolic shape, is associated with jazz.
The cubes are designed to fold into infinite interpretations of themselves. In essence, they are compositional devices, able to be manipulated by the audience and interacted with to display their unique, subjective perception of the cube and the music it represents. The cubes also allow the audience to experience the kinaesthetic (movement) relationship between a musician and their instrument, using their hands. Hands being as crucial as instruments to the construction of music, I have included them as part of the imagery and the experience of “handling“ the artwork itself.
