The universal experience of being a ‘Third Culture Kid’ is communicated through my personal, expressive artwork.
Growing up in Asia with a number of my friends during our formative years has shaped our identity. Then, moving to the Westernized world left us with the constant struggle between two cultures. Which country do we call home? The one we live in, the one we lived in for the longest or where we grew up? Growing up in Hong Kong, I identified with the statement thrown around of whether you are an ‘Egg’ or ‘Banana’, Caucasian on the outside, Asian on the inside.
When I was little, I associated with Asian kids as I connected with them more than the Caucasian people on the playground. I saw myself as Asian despite being white on the outside. I chose to appropriate Ernst Ludwig Kirchner’s Expressionist artworks to express my passionate connection with the subject through emulating his expressive forms using colour and symbolism.
