The current Starlight Room at the Sydney Children's Hospital allows kids and families to escape the hospital's environment and participate in creative leisure activities. This room primarily focuses on the younger age demographic of hospital patients (up to 11-year-olds) and is designed for their needs. As a result of this, I decided it would be important to design an additional 'Starlight Room' to cater to the hospital's teenage patients.

As a long-term patient of the hospital, I have experienced the Starlight Room as I have grown up. It became clear that as a patient gets older, the room becomes too child-orientated and chaotic and loses relevance. From these experiences, I was able to identify the shortcomings of the room for a teenager. I was also aware of the value of having a space outside the hospital ward due to the negative impacts without access to these recreation areas.

My design provides a space that is targeted to be more mature, age-appropriate and beneficial for this teenage patient demographic. This was approached by integrating age-appropriate elements such as a study space (so patients can stay on top of school work) and a kitchen (to provide more patient independence).
