Critical Analysis - Director's Folio

Antigone

For my project, I have chosen to create a Director's Folio of Sophocles' classic Greek tragedy, Antigone, 441 B.C.

In my vision, I state that the blind support of single-minded, traditional views is destructive and can result in a lack of individuality and herd mentality, leading to the timeless issue and mistreatment of women. In a similar vein, herd mentality thinking in contemporary society has resulted in the current environmental crisis and the degradation of the environment. The chorus plays a critical role in my production. Because of this importance, I have made the chorus role a physical one. I believe that including sharp, synchronised movements will highlight the 'herd' that the chorus is and represents. The chorus will have identical costumes, further highlighting their lack of individuality.

Staging the production outside in a national park (North Head, Sydney) will allow the audience to see the natural environment and the Sydney CBD skyline with the added projection of the four elements of nature, further, connect my production to the environment. I intend to leave the audience wondering about the dangers of herd mentality and the effects it is continuing to have on environmental degradation.
