One in five Australians, ranging from 16-85 years of age, experience a mental illness every year. This percentage is growing rapidly in younger Australians and is largely attributed to the popularity of technology and social media use. The most common mental illnesses are anxiety, mood disorders such as depression, and substance abuse disorders. Mental health illnesses can take over the individual and consume their everyday life, sometimes leading to devastating results such as self-harm and even suicide. As a teenager, mental illness is a relevant and prevalent issue, and I was motivated to explore a design solution that addresses these concerns. As many individuals who struggle with mental illness feel alone and isolated with their thoughts, a solution that serves to remind them that they are not struggling alone, but are part of a caring community.
Famous people significantly influence their fans, creating a sense of community and belonging between the supporter. Several celebrities/influencers around the globe support charities and organisations that raise awareness for mental illness. One well-known example is Harry Styles, a former One Direction band member. My solution is creating a jewellery line that helps raise mental illness awareness and makes sense of community through the fanbase of Harry Styles. There are medications available to help suppress the illnesses, such as antidepressants and anti-anxiety medications. My jewellery serves as a constant reminder of this supporting community.
