HEALTH SCIENCES MAJOR & NEUROSCIENCES MINOR CLASS OF 2022
1. Who are you doing research with this summer and what kind of research project are you doing?
This summer I am working with Dr.Sylvester Carter in the Patricia Leahy Research Lab. Dr.Carter's research interests relate to gait (a person's manner of walking) and trip-related falls. With his guidance, my research project will be looking at how one's gait handles increases in cognitive demand.
2. What do you find fascinating in the research you’re doing?
Before starting my research I had never considered how complex gait was. There are so many physical and psychological factors that can impact how someone walks.
3. What skills are you learning through the USURF experience?
So far I have learned how to: submit an IRB application to run a project of my own, collect data using Vicon Cameras, navigate Nexus 2 (which is the computer program used to run the cameras), create models of the data using Visual 3D software, and use the GAITRite mat to collect data. I am also getting familiar with transferring data and running tests to analyze our findings.
4. What are the challenges you’re encountering in your research?
Getting familiarized with the software system and programs that Dr.Carter uses to collect his data was initially challenging. Learning new ways to navigate data collection software can get overwhelming; however, getting more comfortable with the software and programs takes lots of time and practice.
5. How is your USURF experience impacting the way you view your field?
Now that I am aware of how many factors can impact one's ability to walk, my subconscious is thinking about how others or myself are walking. When I am experiencing any leg discomfort I consider what might be causing the issue and how to address it. I also now understand the importance of research: our findings could provide insights into enhancing assessments and treatment efficacy of future patients.
6. Tell us something interesting about yourself.
I love traveling and visiting new places! A goal of mine when I moved to Philadelphia from California was to visit as many East Coast states. The last 3 NorthEast states left on my list to visit are Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine.
