PHARMACEUTICAL CHEMISTRY MAJOR CLASS OF 2023
1. Who are you doing research with this summer and what kind of research project are you doing?
I am doing research with Dr.Sidorenko in the chemistry and biochemistry department, this summer. I am doing research on polymers and attempting to created what is referred to as polymers islands. These islands will allow for modifications to be made on small surfaces to change their properties.
2. What do you find fascinating in the research you’re doing?
What I find very fascinating about my research is how drastically a polymer can change a surface, specifically in its reaction to water. It is also very interesting to work on such a small scale that can lead to big discoveries.
3. What skills are you learning through the USURF experience?
USURF has taught me organizational skills as well as patience. I feel much more prepared to work in a lab in the future thanks to this opportunity.
4. What are the challenges you’re encountering in your research?
One of the challenges I encounter is getting consistent results. Chemistry is such an interesting subject as just a small change in procedure can lead to drastically different results.
5. How is your USURF experience impacting the way you view your field?
USURF has gave me a greater appreciation of the dedication researchers put into their work. Everyone talks about the results but not all the work it takes to get there.
6. Tell us something interesting about yourself.
I really love music. I have been playing the clarinet for almost 12 years and also collect vinyl records.
