1. Who are you doing research with this summer and what kind of research project are you doing?
This summer, I am conducting research with Dr. Zhihong Wang in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry. My project centers around the mitogen-activated protein kinase pathway, a highly dysregulated pathway in multiple varieties of cancer. I am observing the interactions between the kinase suppressor of RAS and the kinase B-Raf in order to determine whether an in-house developed allosteric inhibitor will have a measurable effect on protein-protein interactions.
2. What do you find fascinating in the research you’re doing?
What I love most about my work is the medically applicable potential the research has. Cancer is an infamously lethal disease, and the concept that I can contribute to aiding someone afflicted by cancer is truly motivational.
3. What skills are you learning through the USURF experience?
Through my USURF experience, I have been able to develop my critical thinking skills, confidence in laboratory techniques, and ability to productively work independently. I have also come to value teamwork, thanks to the constant support that my lab offers.
4. What are the challenges you’re encountering in your research?
When learning complicated techniques, I sometimes struggle to keep up with discussions that our lab’s graduate students have, even when the information is pertinent to my work. In research, it is definitely important to be willing to do extra reading to stay informed, and always ask for help if you get confused.
5. How is your USURF experience impacting the way you view your field?
As a pre-medical student, I am currently in the process of shadowing physicians, preparing academically through my coursework, and applying to medical school. I have found that the background information I learn through my USURF research (biochemical pathways of cancer, details about macromolecular functions, protein biology) helps me better understand innovations in medicine and gives me a good foundation for high level science classes.
6. Tell us something interesting about yourself.
I really enjoy running! I recently ran a half-marathon relay with my dad and younger brother, and I hope to eventually run in the Philadelphia Marathon.
