BIOMEDICAL SCIENCES MAJOR CLASS OF 2022
1. Who are you doing research with this summer and what kind of research project are you doing?
I am doing research this summer with Dr. Rajan. I am currently doing research in developmental psychology. Specifically, I am looking to see the impact of bilingualism on executive functioning and early literacy in preschool-aged children.
2. What do you find fascinating in the research you’re doing?
Bilingualism in children is a highly debated subject, and the literature does not exactly clear things up. There have been studies that say it impedes literacy skills, others that say there is no impact, and even some that say it is beneficial. The same goes for executive functioning, with some studies showing a positive impact and others showing no impact. I personally grew up bilingual myself, but I also know many people that could have been bilingual and are not because their parents were worried that a second language may negatively impact their literacy skills in school. I hope with my research I can clear some things up for this ongoing debate.
3. What skills are you learning through the USURF experience?
This USURF experience is teaching me how to work with children through administering tasks on zoom. The USURF experience has also improved my critical thinking skills and ability to pay attention to details, especially during live sessions with children.
4. What are the challenges you’re encountering in your research?
The biggest challenge has been adapting all our tasks to be done virtually. Before the pandemic, we did these tasks in person. Now that everything is virtual, we not only had to adapt the tasks to be online, but also relearn and teach everyone in the lab how to perform the tasks virtually. Thankfully, my lab is full of really hard-working people, so the transition hasn’t been too difficult.
5. How is your USURF experience impacting the way you view your field?
I am gaining an appreciation for everyone who is doing research in developmental psychology. The research is not only interesting, but very important as well. I am only looking at bilingualism, but there are so many things that can contribute to early academic success in children.
6. Tell us something interesting about yourself.
My name means traveler and I love to travel. What a coincidence!
